Mentors
We are grateful that you are considering being a mentor for an MTR Resident during the 2009 – 2010 school year.
We believe urban education is the single greatest social justice and civil rights issue in America today. MTR desires to positively impact student achievement in Memphis’ urban schools through the recruiting, training and retention of excellent urban teachers, all within a Christian context. MTR is a 12-month Residency that provides future teachers with a Masters in Urban Education and a full year (4 days per week) placement assigned to an excellent Mentor-Teacher in the MCS. This is why we need you.
We need excellent, urban educators to mentor, coach, and model for the residents what must be done in classrooms across our city to make a positive impact on our future.
Who are the residents? MTR Residents…
• Graduate from 4-year institution with 3.0 gpa
• Pass Praxis II Content Exam prior to enrolling
• Compete for openings (25% est. acceptance)
• Education and non-Education majors; elementary and secondary training (Preference given to Secondary Math, Science and Spanish teachers).
Who are the mentors? MTR Mentors…
• MCS teachers at host schools with 3 or more years of teaching experience in an urban setting
• Licensed in their subject area
• Meet MCS requirements for student teaching supervisors
• Demonstrate a commitment to student achievement through their planning, instruction, classroom management, and evaluation of self and students
• Reflect on their practice and continually seek professional growth
• Exemplify the MTR Urban Educator Dimensions (see attached).

• Impact the future of MCS by training the next generation of educators
• Receive a $2500 stipend.MTR mentors commit to hosting a resident for the entire school year. Mentors must participate in a 5-day summer training as well as monthly, after school mentor meetings.
